Kaapsehoop never stops to amaze me, the drive up, the drive down. The trees, the birdlife, the wild horses and the weather. It’s as unpredictable as the weather can be. And on Sunday 01 March 2020, it was “pancake weather” meaning it’s cool and misty, perfect for eating pancakes. But it was also perfect to experience the latest gemstone in the Lowveld music treasure box – Garnet Deacon.
A family man that hails from the Vaal Driehoek, a dad of two kids, husband to a beautiful woman and a man of the church. But Garnet is not your typical preacher, no sir, this artist is a lover of music, the preacher of music that is really good. It’s not often you meet an artist that is not afraid to perform his own original music and making covers his own especially the Afrikaans songs. I always say if the music is good, we’ll listen. And boy it was oh so good! Like freshly baked malva pudding served with custard.
The small crowd that had made a trip to Bohemian Groove Café was super impressed with Garnet’s performance. Some tables moved from inside the restaurant to the enclosed veranda. Red wine and Sunday roast filled bellies and the music fuelled the air. Wonderful Sundays at Bohemian. Garnet didn’t miss a beat, he didn’t miss a note. He was smiling, humbled by the applause and just did his thing.

My first impressions of Garnet was always good and I’m so glad that we attended the show. Even our mascot dog, Astrid, was chilled while he was performing. It was really a garnet stone shining in the misty sunlight of the Kaapsehoop valley. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend my Sunday. Garnet, we love to see more of you.
